How lighting can affect your sleep

Circadian rhythms are physical, mental and behavioural changes that follow a daily cycle. One of the most important and well-known circadian rhythms is the sleep-wake cycle. The body’s mask clock, the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN) in the Hypothalamus, is entrained to the 24 hour day cycle via a pathway from the retina in the eye and helps synchronise our internal biological rhythms. The absence of light sends a signal to the SCN to increase the production of Melatonin, which is a hormone that influences sleep. Melatonin levels naturally rise as darkness falls and will continue to increase throughout most of the night. Levels of melatonin will then begin to fall during the early morning due to increase in exposure of light and will remain low throughout most of the day.

Therefore, as you can see, light has a profound effect on sleep pattern and exposure to artificial light at the wrong time can affect your physiological processes involved in the preparations for sleep. Traditionally, human did not need to seek out darkness as our light source is heavily dependent on the sun. The advancement in artificial lighting and digital technology has introduced some highly disruptive challenges to one’s sleep.

How to make the lighting right for sleep

Managing your light exposure in your home and especially in your bedrooms have never been more significant to ensure that you are creating a healthy environment for sleep. At Sove CPAP Clinic, we understand more than others the importance of having a good night’s rest. We are proud to introduce the Philips Hue Ambiance range which can assist with setting the right ambiance for your bedroom with a range of white light from cool daylight to relaxing warm white light. In the morning, start your day right by using the gentle wake up settings where the light brightness will increase gradually to mimic the effect of sunrise. This helps you to wake up naturally instead of being woken up by the loud sound of an alarm clock. In the evening, the relaxing warm light helps you to unwind, relax and prepare your body for a good night’s sleep.
