5 Things That May Be Ruining Your Sleep

July 31, 2021

Do you find it difficult to fall asleep at night or suffer from daytime tiredness due poor sleep? Here are some common reasons you may want to consider to help you sleep better:

  1. Your alcohol intake – alcohol causes poor sleep quality and can worsen sleep apnea as it is a muscle relaxant, further blocking the airways.

  2. Bedding quality – a bad mattress can be detrimental to your sleep. It is recommended to use natural fibres like cotton or wool when looking for bedding fabrics, and if possible avoid synthetic polyester or nylon.

  3. Sleep apnea – this is one of the most common causes of poor sleep and can be a serious sleep disorder if left untreated. This disorder causes temporary pauses in breathing due to the airway muscles closing in. It is most commonly treated with a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine which provides air pressure to keep the airways open.

  4. Caffeine – caffeine stimulates the brain to keep you alert and concentrated. It is recommended to stop drinking caffeine before lunchtime to be able to fall asleep faster.

  5. Stress – with everything going on in the world, it is easy to let stress build up and swarm your thoughts – especially before bed. Natural remedies like lavender can be used to create a peaceful environment and better rest.
