Are All Sleeping Positions Equal?

November 29, 2021

Sleep can vary from person to person. With so many different pillows, mattresses and blankets, different people adapt to different sleeping positions.

But is there a ‘right’ way to drift off to sleep?

The short answer is “no”; but the experts suggest that there is more nuance to this issue than is usually discussed. Certain sleeping positions can be problematic when coupled with poor pillow choice. This is more likely to occur in those who sleep on their stomach or on their back, due to the increased pressure placed on the neck during sleep. However, there are ways to ensure that no matter how you prefer to sleep, you are getting the rest you need.

Sleeping on your back: Back sleeping can be beneficial for alignment of the spine and often offers a good amount of support. However, it is very important to consider your pillow thickness according to co-director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Timothy Morgenthaler. It is recommended that one consider using a thinner pillow if habitually sleeping on your back.

Sleeping on your front: Front sleeping is likely to be the most problematic sleeping position because of the pressure that is placed on the back and neck. This results from the need to turn your head to one side to breath, prompting spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Raj Dasgupta to recommend against front sleeping.

Sleeping on your side: Side sleeping is widely considered the most natural and posturally sound way to sleep. This position can provide some relief from neck and back pain, particularly when using an appropriate pillow that keeps your neck straight. Side sleeping may also help with conditions like heartburn and reflux because of the way your organs sit when you’re on your side. While the question of right or left side is fairly inconsequential, some experts suggest that, to ease the pressure on their heart, pregnant women may benefit from sleeping on their left side.

For most people, finding what’s most comfortable for them is the key to a good night’s sleep. While this is a great rule to follow, it can be helpful to consider your sleeping position in relation to your pillow and mattress to make sure you’re not putting any undue stress on your neck and back.
