How Caffeine Can Affect Your Sleep Quality

October 25, 2021

Many people rely on coffee as part of their daily routine for its energy boosting benefits - however it can also have the reverse effect soon after, making you very tried. Here’s why:

  1. You’ve built up a high tolerance – if you find yourself needing 3-4 cups of coffee a day, it is likely that you have built up a high tolerance. Integrating decaf coffee or herbal teas in replacement of coffee can help to reverse this effect.

  2. You’re using it as a substitute for sleep – many people rely on coffee to power their day rather than getting more sleep. Next time you are feeling fatigued, try taking a 15-20 minute nap instead of reaching for another cup of coffee. If you are still feeling tired after a full night’s sleep, you may need a sleep study.

  3. You’re drinking coffee too late in the day – Many people have difficulty falling asleep if they drink coffee too late. Caffeine can disrupt your sleep up to six hours after consuming it, so as a rule of thumb you should stop drinking caffeine at 2-3pm.
