How Getting Enough Sleep Makes You A Better Leader

August 21, 2021

One of the most critical components to running a successful business is getting enough sleep. Getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep a night as well as deep sleep is essential for optimal function and continued success.

Here are three scientifically proven ways that demonstrate how sleep can affect you as a leader:

  1. You can’t focus – One particular experiment at Washington State University showed that participants who slept for six hours per night over two weeks performed very poorly on a Psychomotor Vigilance Test – which assesses fatigue-related changes in alertness.

  2. Your judgment may be off – A study of 42 participants were restricted to five hours of sleep for five nights and were asked to portray a set of images as either positive, negative or neutral. It was found that these participants saw a lot more of these images in a negative light, whereas the control group with plenty of sleep were more likely to see them as positive images.

  3. You can’t solve tough problems – A lack of both REM (dreaming) sleep and deep sleep can impede your creativity which is important in problem-solving. Researchers at Lancaster University in England examined the problem-solving abilities of 63 subjects of varying sleep quality. As expected, those who had a good night’s sleep were better able to solve the tougher problems.
