Restless leg syndrome associated with increased risk of heart disease

March 23, 2021

RLS is a common condition characterized by discomfort throughout the legs when trying to fall asleep. Symptoms can be general restlessness or twitching, a burning sensation or strong tension. It can be caused by a wide range of conditions, but it’s the association between RLS and heart disease that is most concerning.

RLS is a common condition characterized by discomfort throughout the legs when trying to fall asleep. Symptoms can be general restlessness or twitching, a burning sensation or strong tension. It can be caused by a wide range of conditions, but it’s the association between RLS and heart disease that is most concerning.

A 2018 paper published by the American Academy of Neurology found that women with restless leg syndrome have a significantly higher cardiovascular disease mortality rate. A 2008 study also found that those with the condition are twice as likely to have a stroke or heart disease. People who experience RLS symptoms over 15 times per month are the most at risk.

If you or your partner regularly experience restless legs while trying to sleep, it’s important to speak to your doctor. Get a sleep and heart health check up to make sure you’re not at risk.
