Study Finds A Simple Trick That Can Improve Sleep Quality In Those Over 60

May 8, 2021

Sleeping can be a real struggle as you age, especially for those over 60 who suffer from a sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea.

Thankfully, sleep experts have discovered a helpful bedtime trick to improve sleep quality. A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society explains that listening to calming music for 30 minutes before bedtime can improve sleep quality in people over 60. The study of 288 participants compared the effects of calming vs. rhythmic music over a four-week period, finding that the slower tempo of calming music had a better effect on sleep. Both genres were still more effective than falling sleep without music.

Listening to relaxing music for at least 30 minutes before bedtime can help to slow your heart rate and breathing pace while also lowering blood pressure – all of which decrease stress and anxiety. Remember, consistency is key. It may take up to four weeks to feel the full benefits.
