The Sleep-health Inequality Between Economic And Racial Groups

July 3, 2021

Poor sleep is a widespread problem, but statistics show that some racial and socioeconomic groups are suffering more than others.

A 2013 survey found that 35.2% of people earning below the poverty level reported sleeping less than six hours, compared with 27.7% of those earning more than four times the poverty level. People from lower socioeconomic areas are also more likely to be overweight or obese, which can increase the likelihood of developing obstructive sleep apnea.

Furthermore, a 2015 study looked at racial inequality in sleep health, finding that African Americans, Hispanics and Chinese Americans were much more likely to get less sleep than white Americans. Hispanic and Chinese Americans were twice as likely to get fewer hours of sleep, and African Americans were 5 times more likely to get less sleep than their white counterparts.

Inadequate sleep among low-income adults and racial minorities contributes to higher rates of illnesses, including heart disease, dementia, diabetes, obesity and stoke. These sleep-health disparities need to be addressed as key public health issues so that all people can enjoy healthy sleep and a healthy life.
