What Are Night Terrors, And Why Do We Have Them?

June 13, 2021

Throughout the pandemic, neurologists have observed an increase in sleep disturbances, including night terrors and night-time panic attacks. If you’ve ever seen someone suddenly wake up screaming, pale, looking like they’ve seen a ghost, you may have just seen them experience a night terror.

Night terrors occur during deep sleep, and don’t actually wake you up. If you had a night terror, you probably won’t remember it, unlike a nightmare. Night terrors are most common in younger children, but can occur in adults. They can be triggered by stress, or lack of sleep – which have been on the rise during the pandemic. If you are struggling with night terrors as an adult, the best way to minimise them is by getting better quality sleep. Avoid drinking or eating too much before bed, and make sure you’re getting enough sleep.
