Fiji Capital Goes Into 14 Day Lockdown

Suva, the Fijian capital entered a 14 day lockdown on Monday as a result of a ‘superspreader’ funeral event. Non-essential businesses have been shut down, and around 100,000 people must remain in containment zones.

Cases spiked after a soldier contracted the virus and passed it onto a maid, who later attended a funeral with 500 people. 4 cases were diagnosed over the weekend, with 3 linked to the funeral. So far, Fiji has recorded less than 100 cases and 2 deaths thanks to strict isolation and border measures. The new spike is a heavy blow to a country reliant on international tourism, as they are forced to put aside hopes for quarantine-free travel bubbles for the time being.

This is yet another reminder that we need to remain vigilant, and work towards world vaccination as soon as possible. It will be up to more developed nations like Australia to help poorer nations get the vaccines they need.
