How Long Do Covid-19 Vaccines Take To Work?

June 3, 2021

As the drive for COVID-19 vaccination continues, many people are wondering how long it takes for the vaccine to work. COVID-19 vaccines don’t offer instant protection – which is why it is important all people get vaccinated sooner rather than later. In fact, clinical trials have shown that your vaccine protection is optimal around 2 weeks after your second dose.

2 weeks after dose 2, healthy people are almost entirely protected against severe disease and death, are less likely to be infected, and if infected will produce less virus and are less likely to experience COVID-19 symptoms. So why does it take so long?

With any vaccine, it takes time for the immune system to recognise the target, and start making antibodies – usually around 10 days. It takes around a week for specialised immune cells called T-cells to start reacting as well. However, the second dose of a vaccine can work much more quickly, as the immune system is already primed. This second dose is what helps ensure you have strong, long-lasting immunity. This is why it is crucial that all front-line workers get both doses as soon as possible, to receive the full benefits of vaccination.
