NSW COVID-19 Hospitalisation Numbers Highest In Over A Year

The number of COVID-19 patients in NSW hospitals has hit its highest number since April last year. As of Wednesday night, there were 73 COVID-19 positive patients in hospital, with 19 of those in the ICU. Just one month ago, we only had 1 COVID-19 patient hospital.

The NSW outbreak is now responsible for close to 1,000 locally acquired infections. The outbreak has spread from NSW to Victoria, which has now plunged into a snap lockdown to stop the outbreak.

President of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, John Wilson, also warned that international data suggests that the Delta variant is more likely to cause injury in patients than previous variants. Variants such as the Delta strain have been reported to attack lung cells more readily, and so may cause respiratory failure earlier or in a greater number of cases.
