Opening International Borders Could Lead To 1000 Cases A Week

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has warned Australians that if international travel restrictions are widely lifted, Australians would have to get used to dealing with “a thousand cases a week or more.” This would end the national cabinet’s goal of zero community transmission.

The Prime Minister did also raise the possibility of Australians being able to quarantine at home for business and funeral trips when vaccinated. This could then open up the possibility of greater travel, provided cases stay low. However, Mr Morrison has said this will require the backing of State Premiers, with an agreement to keep borders open between states if cases arose. At the moment, with Australia’s vaccination program lagging behind, international borders may not open fully until late next year.
