Healthy Aging Starts With Better Sleep August 26, 2026 Healthy Aging Starts With Better Sleep When we think about healthy aging, nutritious food and regular exercise usually come to mind. But there’s another everyday habit that deserves a place on that list: sleep. Research increasingly suggests that sleep is connected not only with how rested we feel, but also with brain health, metabolism, immune function and how our bodies age over time. Sleep may influence how your body ages Your chronological age tells you how many birthdays you’ve had, but your biological age reflects how your body is functioning at a cellular and organ level. Researchers are now using biological “aging clocks”, based on measures such as medical imaging, proteins and metabolites, to explore what might influence this process. Interestingly, sleep appears to be part of the picture. Research involving around half a million UK Biobank participants found a U-shaped relationship between sleep and biological aging.1 Both short sleep of less than six hours and long sleep of more than eight hours were associated with faster biological aging, while the lowest levels were observed at around 6.4 to 7.8 hours.1 However, this doesn’t prove that sleep duration itself causes faster aging. Longer or shorter sleep can also reflect underlying health problems. Better sleep supports your brain and body Sleep is an important time for restoration. In the brain, restorative sleep supports memory and may help clear waste products, including proteins associated with cognitive decline.2 Sleep disturbances may interfere with this process, which is one reason researchers are investigating sleep as a potentially modifiable factor in healthy brain aging.2 The effects reach beyond the brain. Poor sleep has been linked with inflammation and changes in immune signalling, while disrupted sleep is also associated with metabolic changes, including insulin resistance and poorer glucose control.1 Short sleep has been associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, ischaemic heart disease and heart arrhythmias.1 Quality and consistency matter too Healthy sleep isn’t simply about reaching a certain number of hours. Deep, restorative sleep supports memory, learning and immune function, while fragmented sleep is associated with increased inflammation and poorer long-term health.1 Consistency matters as well. Going to bed and waking at roughly the same time helps keep your circadian rhythm in sync. Irregular sleep timing can disrupt this internal clock and has been linked with strain on cardiovascular and metabolic health.3 Simple habits can help. Consider reducing screens before bed, limiting caffeine later in the day, avoiding heavy late-night meals and creating a cool, dark and quiet bedroom. Alcohol can make you feel sleepy initially, but it can disrupt sleep architecture and contribute to lighter, more fragmented sleep later in the night. Don’t overlook sleep apnea Sometimes poor sleep isn’t a lifestyle problem. Sleep apnea causes repeated interruptions to breathing, which can lower oxygen levels and fragment the deeper stages of sleep involved in restoration and memory consolidation.2 Importantly, it can go undiagnosed, particularly when symptoms aren’t recognised. Make sleep part of your healthy aging plan Healthy aging isn’t something to think about only later in life. Experts encourage prioritising brain and body health, including good sleep, from midlife onwards.2 So alongside eating well and staying active, make sleep a genuine health priority. If you regularly struggle to sleep, wake feeling unrefreshed, snore heavily, experience breathing pauses during sleep or feel excessively tired during the day, speak with your doctor. Identifying and treating a sleep problem now could help you feel better today while supporting your health for the years ahead. References 1.
