Vaccinated? Here’s How Your COVID-19 Risk Changes

August 2, 2021

Want to know what protection you’ll have after your COVID-19 vaccines? Here are answers to 3 of the most common questions.

Do vaccines stop you from getting COVID-19?

Being vaccinated with the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccine greatly reduces your chances of getting COVID-19. Preliminary data from the UK shows that both vaccines stops about 80% of infections. However, it’s important to remember that vaccinated people can still get infected, particularly if there is lots of virus circulating around and its very infectious like the Delta strain. Vaccines aren’t 100% effective because we all have slightly different immune systems, but they still greatly reduce your chance of being infected.

Can I infect others if I’m vaccinated?

If you do become infected after being vaccinated, you can still pass the virus on – particularly the Delta strain. But because you are much less likely to be infected in the first place, you are still less of a risk to those around you.

Could I be hospitalised from COVID-19 if I’m vaccinated?

It is highly unlikely you will be hospitalised from COVID-19 after you’ve been fully vaccinated. Data from the US has shown 97% of hospitalised cases were unvaccinated, and studies from the UK also show that Pfizer and AstraZeneca were 95% and 92% effective at stopping hospitalisations respectively.
