What Percentage Of Aussies Will Experience Covid-19 Vaccine Side-effects?

April 7, 2021

Australia’s National immunisation surveillance system, AusVaxSafety, is giving Australians insight into how they might react to a COVID-19 vaccine. Overall, 51.5% of Australian responders reported no side effects after their vaccination, with 48.5% experiencing at least one side effect. The most common side effects have been pain at the injection site, fatigue and headaches. However, only 1.2% had bad enough side effects to visit a doctor or hospital.

For the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, 67.3% reported at least one side effect, most commonly fatigue (53.8%). A quarter missed work, study or routine activities for a short period of time (<1 day), and 1.8% reported seeing a doctor after being vaccinated. By comparison, 36.3% of Pfizer vaccine recipients reported side effects after their first dose, with 4.3% having their activities affected and 0.6% visiting a doctor. For both vaccines, the risk of serious side effects remain very low.
