Worldwide Vaccine Rollout Will Take Many Years

April 12, 2021

“This is not the beginning of the end, this is the beginning of a new era.” Professor of Epidemiology Mary-Louise McLaws has warned Australians that the vaccine roll-out will not snap the world back to normal. Currently, approximately 16 million vaccine doses are being given daily. At this rate, the world would reach herd immunity in 2 years (75-85% vaccinated) – but huge vaccine inequities will leave many countries behind.

At our current rates of vaccination, Prof McLaws believes Australia will reach herd immunity around March next year, although this has likely been pushed back further after changes to AstraZeneca recommendations. Normal international travel will be dependent on our own vaccination rates, but also the rates of destination countries. Whilst safe travel may resume to the USA, Europe, China, South Korea and other countries in the next year or so, other countries will be much riskier. Thailand, South Africa, Vietnam, and others may take close to a decade to achieve herd immunity currently. This will be extremely hard for huge number of Australians with family and friends overseas.
