Infrared thermometers, also known as non-contact thermometers, are digital thermometers capable of reading surface temperature from a distance without needing to touch the object. An infrared thermometer (or IR thermometer) is therefore perfect for taking body temperatures without contact in both clinical and non clinical settings. Non contact thermometers are also used in a range of other industries, including construction, laboratories and manufacturing where infrared thermometers are designed specifically for surface temperature measurement in hard to reach places, sterile rooms, high temperature surfaces or moving surfaces.

How do non-contact thermometers work?

Infrared thermometers measure surface temperature by focusing and measuring the amount of infrared light emitted from an object. The hotter an object is, the more infrared light it emits. An infrared thermometer captures this infrared light, and converts it to heat and then electricity. The temperature measurement is then displayed on LCD screens. Some non contact thermometers also come with a laser sight, and may be marketed as laser thermometer gun. The laser sight acts as a pointer to show what area the laser thermometer gun is taking the surface temperature of. However, a laser sight is not necessary for most forehead thermometers or clinical infrared thermometers.

What do you use an infrared thermometer for?

Infrared thermometers are commonly used to measure or screen body temperatures – these IR thermometers may be ear thermometers or forehead thermometers. This may be preferable when contact measurement risks the spread of disease. Non contact infrared thermometers can also be used in industrial settings to measure surface temperatures of hard to reach places, clean rooms, or high temperature environments. Many people have chosen to buy non contact thermometers for their businesses (clinical and non clinical) during the pandemic to screen body temperatures. Anyone with a high temperature (eg. over 37.5oC) who could potentially be sick with the virus can then be identified with a forehead thermometer and advised to go home. However, it is important to remember that even with body temperature checks, other protective measures are needed during the pandemic. Face maskshand sanitisers, social distancing and disinfectants should also be used by businesses to help stop the spread of viruses.

How accurate are infrared thermometers?

Infrared thermometers range in accuracy. Clinical infrared thermometers can usually give a forehead temperature reading with an accuracy of 0.1 to 0.2oC. This means that the temperature measurement can be 0.1-0.2oC higher or lower than the person’s true body temperature. However, industrial IR thermometers designed specifically for a much larger measurement range (eg. -30 to 500oC) may not provide as accurate temperature readings. If you are looking to buy non contact thermometers, check the accuracy of the model and the measurement range to make sure it is suitable, particularly if you are using it to measure body temperatures.

What is the best non contact thermometer?

Non contact infrared thermometers are designed specifically for different purposes. Make sure to check the measurement range and the accuracy of the non contact infrared thermometer you are interested in. If it is a non contact infrared thermometer designed specifically for clinical use or for taking forehead temperature readings, make sure it has been approved by the Therapeutic Goods Association and has an ARTG number. If you are using a non contact thermometer in a non clinical setting, such as for checking surface temperature in high temperature environments with a larger measurement range, it may be worthwhile looking for a digital thermometer with a laser sight to help with the accuracy of the measurements.

How do you use a non-contact thermometer to check your temperature?

When using a non contact infrared thermometer to take body temperatures, please make sure to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for the most accurate temperature readings. The following can be used as a simple guide for an infrared forehead thermometer otherwise:

  1. Turn the thermometer on. Make sure it is at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before using.
  2. Hold the thermometer perpendicular to the person’s forehead, usually between 1-5cm away. Wipe away any sweat and hair covering the forehead.
  3. Press the button/trigger and wait for the temperature reading to appear on the LCD screen. Take an average of 3 temperature measurements for the most accurate temperature readings.

Inaccurate readings often arise due to incorrect use of the infrared thermometer. Please make sure you are aware of the measurement range, storage conditions and patient conditions for your IR thermometer, particularly for those using non contact thermometers in a clinical setting.

Among adults, the average body temperature ranges between 36.1 oC to 37.2oC. This is a normal, healthy body temperature range to expect when using an infrared thermometer. A temperature of 37.5oC and higher may indicate a very low grade fever. Generally, a fever is considered to be 38oC and higher. It is also important to remember that most infrared thermometers have error measurement range of 0.1 – 0.2oC. Please see a medical professional if you have symptoms of fever.
