FAQs

1. How does a CPAP machine work?

CPAP machines work by changing air pressure. These devices provide pressurised air through a mask that seals with your mouth or nose. This treats obstructive sleep apnoea and normalizes a patient’s breathing while asleep.. While CPAP machines don't breathe for you, automatic  machines can detect a collapse of the airway and change pressure accordingly.

2. Can I buy a CPAP machine without a sleep study?

Before commencing treatment, you should consult your doctor and first have a sleep study for a proper diagnosis.

3. How do I choose the right CPAP machine for me?

If you have OSA and CPAP treatment is prescribed, it's important to choose the right equipment that suits your needs and budget. There are two types of CPAP machines available: fixed pressure devices, and auto-adjusting devices. Recommendations depend on a variery of factors, your doctor’s specifications, along with your personal preferences. From size and comfort to built-in humidification and sleep data, our experts make recommendations based on what's important to you.

4. Are there different types of CPAP masks?

There are three types of CPAP masks available: full face masks, nasal masks, and nasal pillow masks. Full face masks cover both the mouth and nose, nasal masks cover or cradle the nose, and nasal pillow masks are inserted directly into the nostrils. Most users develop a mask preference, and some CPAP machine brands specialise in particular technologies and devices.

5. How long does it take to use a CPAP machine?

CPAP should be used every night when you go to sleep. If used properly, CPAP treatment is effective for as long as it is being used. In other words, it can be effective from the very first night. Some patients use  CPAP machines are a successful treatment option for sleep apnea, as long as you follow expert advice. These devices are known to work very quickly, with some people feeling better after a single night and others taking a few weeks to adjust. While CPAP treatment is not necessarily life-long, many people engage with this therapy on a long-term basis.

6. Can I adjust the pressure settings on my CPAP machine?

Whether you have a fixed pressure device or an auto-adjusting model, CPAP machines are set up with specific pressure settings. For automatic machines, a pressure range is set for the device to automatically work within, depending on whether the patient is having an episode of apnoea or hypopnea. If you would like to change the settings for your machine, you should first speak with your treatment consultant or sleep specialist.

7. How often should I use my CPAP machine?

CPAP is a treatment, not a cure. If used correctly, treatment is effective for all the time it is being used. Conversely, on nights when the device is not used, or as soon as it is taken off, the splint that is being applied to a patient’s airway ceases and the snoring /apnoeas will return. Therefore, a patient should use CPAP every night, for all hours of sleep, for maximum effectiveness. It can take time to adjust to treatment, and that is when the support of your provider and from family and friends become important. Sove CPAP Clinic

8. What are the common side effects of using a CPAP machine?

Possible side effects include time to adjust to treatment initially, discomfort while breathing, dry mouth, nasal congestion, skin irritation,  and claustrophobia. Many of these side effects can be mitigated by choosing equipment that suits your needs – for example, using a nasal pillow mask if you have claustrophobia, and a CPAP humidifier can help you to avoid dry mouth symptoms..  Sove CPAP Clinic has a wide range of CPAP masks and equipment, and our experienced consultants will guide you in this process.

9. Are there portable or travel-friendly CPAP options?

CPAP machines are now quite compact, but if you like to travel, there are devices that are designed specifically for travel, such as the ResMed Airmini.  These travel  CPAP machines provide convenience on the road, thanks to small dimensions and advanced battery supplies. These compact and quiet CPAP machines can be used almost anywhere. From long weekends in holiday homes and hotels to camping trips with friends and family, your sleep apnea doesn't have to hold you back.

10. Are there any lifestyle changes that can complement CPAP therapy?

CPAP devices work on their own and are effective as long as they are used correctly. However, it is always a good idea to adopt a healthy lifestyle. We know obstructive sleep apnoea is associated with obesity, so adopting a healthy diet and regular exercise will improve your overall health.  Good sleep hygiene, such as avoiding alcohol and caffeine close to bed time, is recommended for everyone . In terms of sleeping positions, sleeping on your side can also help for patients who have more apneic episodes while sleeping in the supine position.
