How to Clean Your CPAP Equipment

How to Clean Your CPAP Equipment

When you rely on a CPAP machine to manage sleep apnea, keeping it in good condition isn’t optional - it’s essential. Many people focus on cleaning (which is important), but just as crucial is knowing when to replace parts. A well-maintained CPAP system delivers consistent therapy, feels more comfortable to use, and supports better long-term health.

Let’s start with something many users overlook: replacement timelines.

Replace Parts Regularly - Even If They “Look Fine”

CPAP components naturally wear out over time. Even if they appear clean, small changes in shape or flexibility can affect your mask seal and airflow.

Here’s a general guide to replacement:

  • Every month: Memory foam mask cushion, Air filter
  • Every six months: Silicone mask cushion, Mask headgear
  • Every 12 months: Entire mask, CPAP tubing/hose, Humidifier tub

Think of it like replacing the tyres on your car - you wouldn’t wait for a blowout. Staying on schedule helps prevent air leaks, discomfort and reduced therapy effectiveness.

Your Simple Cleaning Kit

You don’t need specialised products or expensive cleaning systems. In fact, simple is best. Keep the following on hand:

  • A sink or tub
  • Warm, drinking-quality water (about 30°C)
  • Mild liquid detergent
  • A clean towel

Avoid strong chemicals or harsh detergents, as these can damage materials or leave behind residue.

Weekly Deep Clean: Mask, Frame, Headgear and Tubing

Set aside time once a week to give your equipment a more thorough wash.

Start by unplugging your CPAP machine and disconnecting the mask and tubing. Separate your mask into its three parts - the cushion, frame and headgear.

Wash the frame, headgear and tubing in warm water with a small amount of mild detergent. Gently clean the tubing inside and out by running soapy water through it, making sure all soap is rinsed away thoroughly. Lay everything flat on a clean towel to air dry, keeping it out of direct sunlight. Sun exposure can weaken the materials over time and cause premature deterioration.

Make sure the tubing is completely dry inside before reconnecting it to your machine.

Daily Habits That Make a Difference

A couple of quick daily steps go a long way in keeping your therapy hygienic.

Each morning, empty any leftover water from the humidifier tub. Disconnect the tub from the device, empty the water, and rinse with fresh water. Keep the lid open and allow the tub to naturally air-dry out of direct sunlight. The humidifier should remain clear and free from discolouration.

The mask cushion also benefits from daily cleaning. Because it rests against your skin overnight, it collects natural oils that can affect the seal. A gentle wash in warm water with mild detergent, followed by a thorough rinse and air drying, will keep it fresh and comfortable. Alternatively, use a CPAP wipe on your cushion for a quick daily clean.

Keep Your Therapy Working for You

Consistent cleaning and timely replacement of parts help ensure your CPAP continues to support your sleep apnea treatment effectively. Neglecting maintenance can lead to poor mask seals, skin irritation, unpleasant smells or reduced airflow - all of which can interfere with a good night’s sleep.

If you notice worsening apnea symptoms, persistent leaks, discomfort, or visible wear and tear on your equipment, don’t ignore it. Speak with your doctor or one of our CPAP consultants to review your setup. A small adjustment or replacement could make a significant difference to your sleep - and your overall health.
