Did NSW Total Lockdown Come Too Late?

The NSW government was finally forced to call a total lockdown on the weekend, as cases continue to soar and spread out to regional areas. Unfortunately, the soft lockdown approach may have come at enormous cost. If a two-week total lockdown had been called when the Delta variant first appeared in Bondi, it would’ve cost less than $3 billion, if successful. Currently, the restrictions and lockdowns in NSW are estimated to have cost $17 billion, and counting.

Although other states such as Western Australia and Queensland have been critiqued for their ‘trigger happy’ lockdowns and border closures, their strategies have successfully contained the virus. Studies have further shown that health and the economy have gone hand in hand in this pandemic. We can only hope that with the new lockdown measures, both our health system and economy will be able to bounce back from this terrible outbreak.
