Mixing and matching vaccine doses could be the way forward for australia

May 31, 2021

Australia’s slow vaccine rollout has been caused by many things – supply issues, changing eligibility, side effects and complacency. In the face of these issues, mixing and matching COVID-19 vaccines could help boost vaccination rates and solve many rollout issues.

New data from mix and match studies in Spain and the United Kingdom has shown promising results. Patients received one dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, and one dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Both studies found that vaccine side effects were mild to moderate, and short-lived. The Spanish study furthermore found that people had significantly higher antibody responses after receiving a Pfizer booster following an AstraZeneca dose. Initial results indicate that this mix and match might be better than two doses of AstraZeneca.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) hasn’t approved mix and match COVID-19 vaccinations, but some countries are already rolling these out. Regardless of the vaccination schedule, it’s important to get vaccinated as soon as possible to help stop COVID-19 outbreaks.
