New Health Advice: Pfizer Preferred Vaccine For Under 50s

April 9, 2021

In a press conference last night, the Prime Minister and Health Minister announced new advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) regarding the AstraZeneca vaccine. Due to the very rare side effect of particular blood clotting syndromes, the ATAGI has recommended the Pfizer vaccine to adults under 50 over the AstraZeneca vaccine. Given the higher risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes for adults over 50, the AstraZeneca vaccine is still very beneficial.

At the current time, it is not clear how this will affect the vaccine rollout and the reopening of Australia. Prime Minister Scott Morrison admitted that there is no guarantee the population will be vaccinated by the end of the year anymore. Luckily, Australia has extremely low numbers of COVID-19 and remains relatively safe for the time being. 51 million doses of Novavax jabs are expected later in the year, and the government is pushing to see if other jabs can be brought forward. As we said months ago, manufacturing Pfizer and other mRNA jabs here could help lessen the blow of these new developments.
