Obesity Linked to More Severe COVID-19

November 11, 2020

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors began to notice a concerning trend in those severely ill from COVID-19 – many were obese. This link between obesity and COVID-19 severity has now become clearer as new large population studies have demonstrated that overweight persons are at a higher risk of falling critically ill with COVID-19. One study analysing over 399,000 patients found that obese persons with COVID-19 were 113% more likely to be hospitalised, 74% more likely to be admitted to ICU, and 48% more likely to die (https://bit.ly/35hZtCJ). These grim statistics are driven by many factors, including the effect of obesity on the heart, lungs, immune system and even on avoiding medical care because of weight-related stigma. Obesity also increases the likelihood of other conditions which can put people more at risk of severe COVID-19, including heart disease and diabetes.

Experts have encouraged those struggling with their weight to try and make small changes. Exercising, and losing even a little weight can help improve your health and reduce the chances of developing severe COVID-19. During these times, it is more important than ever to be taking more responsibility for our health. Keep trying to do the little things to look after your body – eating a balanced diet, exercising more and sleeping well. Stay safe Australia.
