QLD Vaccine Stockpiling Contributes To COVID Outbreak

March 31, 2021

2 clusters in Brisbane have now arisen from unvaccinated healthcare workers from the Princess Alexandra Hospital. As of Tuesday, 18 cases have been linked to these outbreaks. There is concern that states hoarding vaccine doses may have contributed to the outbreak. Vaccination of staff in COVID-19 wards only became mandatory today in Queensland, as previously there was concern over the number of vaccines available.

Queensland has been stockpiling vaccine doses since the beginning of the rollout over concerns about supply consistency. Queensland Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the state was stockpiling Pfizer doses to ensure second doses were set aside for every first dose given. However, Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kellly said states do not need to hoard vaccine doses for second doses. The Commonwealth has made clear how many doses will be distributed to Australia. To help stop the spread, people need to be vaccinated as quickly as possible.
