Queenland And WA Won’t Reopen Border Til 90% Vaccinated

September 21, 2021

Queensland and WA have both flagged that they may not reopen to the rest of Australia until a 90% vaccination rate is reached. Both states have refused to sign up to the National Cabinet deal of reopening at 80% fully vaccinated, and have not released roadmaps for how they will transition out of the pandemic.

A poll in Queensland showed that residents would prefer to keep the border closed if it prevented an outbreak leading to increased restrictions. However, tourism industry leaders are battling to have the state borders open for the Christmas-New Year holidays. Unfortunately, both WA and Queensland have some of the worst vaccination rates in the country, with around 42% of their residents vaccinated and just over 60% having received one dose.
