Shift Workers Are Up To 3x More Likely To Be Involved In Motor Vehicle Accidents
The traditional 9-5 work day has shifted for many people. Now, it’s common for people to work night shifts or ‘graveyard shifts’ from 11pm – 7am, which drastically increases the likelihood of crashes.
Those who work non-traditional hours are more likely to develop a chronic medical condition – shift work sleep disorder. This disorder is characterised by insomnia or excess sleepiness. A new study from the University of Missouri found that people suffering from shift worker sleep disorders had almost a 300% increased risk of having a traffic crash. Both sleep apnea and insomnia have a 30% increased risk of traffic crashes.
If you are a shift worker, or experience excessive daytime tiredness, consider how you can stay safe on the roads. Use public transport or rideshares if you can, and make sure to use rest stops if you feel tired whilst driving.
