Shift workers at higher risk of contracting coronavirus

March 29, 2021

Shift workers often experience diminished sleep quality which comes with several health consequences – and research has revealed that COVID-19 is one of them.

According to a global study of healthcare workers, insufficient sleep and work burnout have been linked to a heightened risk of viral and bacterial infections. To maintain our health and energy levels, we need at least 7-9 hours of good quality sleep per night. A US study of 1,300 healthcare workers found that those who experience sleep problems had an 88% heightened risk of COVID-19.

Participants also reported their average sleeping hours, which showed that every extra hour of sleep was associated with a 12% lower chance of infection. This means there is also an elevated risk of COVID-19 for insomniacs and those with broken sleep routines.

It is so important for our frontline health workers and those suffering from sleep disorders to focus on their sleep quality to minimize health risks. If you feel you may be suffering from insufficient or poor quality sleep, speak with your family doctor about how you can improve your sleep.
