At-Home Sleep Studies: 10 FAQs

May 28, 2025

If your doctor has recommended a sleep study, you might have questions — and some nerves too. It’s normal to wonder what to expect: Will it be uncomfortable? Will you be able to sleep? Rest assured, sleep studies today are designed to be as smooth and stress-free as possible, especially when done from the comfort of your own bed.

Here are the top 10 most common questions we hear — along with answers to help clear things up.

1. Will I actually be able to sleep during the study?

Yes! Most people sleep better than they expect — even with the sensors on. It might not be your most comfortable night of rest, but just know that this is normal and most people sleep enough hours to get valid data.

2. Do I have to stay overnight at a hospital?

Not at all. Sove CPAP Clinic offers bulk billed, at-home sleep studies across Australia. You’ll sleep in your own bed, in your own environment — which usually means more natural sleep.

3. What does a home sleep study involve?

You’ll attend a quick appointment at one of our clinics where a sleep technician will fit you with sensors that monitor your breathing, oxygen levels, brain activity, heart rate, and movement. Then you go home, sleep, and return the equipment the next morning.

4. What if I move around a lot in my sleep?

That’s completely fine. The equipment is designed to handle movement, and the sensors are secured well enough to stay in place overnight.

5. Will it hurt?

Not at all. The sensors are non-invasive and completely painless. You might feel a little aware of them at first, but most people forget they’re there once they settle in.

6. What should I wear?

It’s best to shower before your appointment and wear the clothes you’ll sleep in. Avoid makeup, nail polish, or fake nails on your left index finger, and consider shaving facial hair for better sensor contact.

7. What does it cost?

If you have Medicare and meet the eligibility criteria, your sleep study will be fully bulk billed — with no out-of-pocket cost. To qualify, you must be 18 years or older, have not had a Medicare-funded sleep study in the past 12 months, and have a referral from your doctor. You can become eligible by either completing a short questionnaire and meeting the criteria, or by having a fully bulk-billed telehealth consultation with one of our sleep and respiratory specialists.

If you're not eligible for bulk billing, we offer private options. A comprehensive Level 2 sleep study costs $400, while a simpler Level 3 study focused on breathing and oxygen is just $100.

8. Can I take my regular medications?

Yes, but let your doctor and the technician know what you’re taking, as some medications can affect sleep patterns.

9. What happens after the study?

Your data is reviewed by a Respiratory & Sleep Specialist. If you’re diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, treatment options will be discussed with you. CPAP therapy is a highly effective treatment and works by gently blowing air through a mask to keep your airway open overnight, eliminating sleep apnea symptoms.

10. How do I get started?

Speak to your doctor and ask for a sleep study. If you or your doctor emails or faxes a completed referral to Centurion Healthcare, we’ll give you a call to book your appointment. It’s that easy.
