How to Prepare for a Home Sleep Study

June 30, 2025

If you've been waking up exhausted, gaining weight without a clear reason, or struggling to stay focused during the day, your body might be trying to tell you something. Sleep disorders—particularly obstructive sleep apnea—are far more common than most people realise, and they often go undiagnosed. Fortunately, getting answers doesn’t have to involve an overnight stay in hospital. A home sleep study can be a simple, effective way to uncover what's really going on at night.

Here’s what you need to know to prepare for your home sleep study, so everything runs smoothly and you get the most accurate results possible.

What to Expect on the Day

You’ll first attend a 20-minute appointment at the clinic, where a sleep technician will attach a compact device (called the Falcon HST) and a series of small, non-invasive sensors to your body. These will monitor your breathing, brain activity, eye movements, muscle tone, heart rate and rhythm, oxygen levels, and movement during sleep. After your appointment, you’ll head home and sleep in your own bed, then return the device to the clinic the next morning, usually by 10am.

How to Prepare Beforehand

On the day of your appointment, please shower and ensure your hair is clean and completely dry—avoid any styling products like gel or hairspray, as these can interfere with the sensors. Remove any makeup, thick creams, nail polish, and fake nails and men should consider trimming facial hair if possible. If you are unable to trim your facial hair, the sensors can be adjusted.

Wear loose, comfy clothes that you’d be happy to sleep in. Once you’re hooked up to the equipment, you won’t be able to change. Bring your Medicare card and ID. And importantly, make sure you’re able to return the device to the same clinic between 9–10am the following business day.

Getting There and Getting Home

Because the device includes multiple wires and sensors, we recommend driving or having someone take you to and from your appointment. Avoid public transport or social plans afterward—you’ll likely feel more comfortable heading straight home. If rain is forecast, bring an umbrella to protect the device, as moisture can damage the equipment.

During and After the Study

Once home, try to keep your evening quiet and restful—no strenuous activity or showers. Do not remove or adjust the equipment overnight. In the morning, carefully remove all components but do not cut or unplug any wires. Return the entire kit, along with the completed questionnaire, in the carry case provided.

Results will be available within 10–14 days and sent to your referring doctor for review.
