Testosterone Trouble? Your Sleep Could Be to Blame

June 10, 2025

Getting less than five hours of sleep a night? You could be lowering your testosterone levels without even realising it. Studies show that just one week of restricted sleep — under five hours per night — can cause a 10–15% drop in testosterone in healthy young men.1 And for many men, poor sleep isn’t just the occasional late night — it’s a nightly pattern, often driven by an underlying issue like obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common but underdiagnosed sleep disorder where the muscles in your throat relax during sleep, causing the airway to collapse or become blocked. These blockages force your body to repeatedly stop and start breathing throughout the night. As a result, you don’t reach the deep, restorative stages of sleep — especially REM — which is when your body produces most of its testosterone.2

OSA affects around 900 million people worldwide, and men are particularly at risk; 3 in 10 men have OSA.3,4 Research shows a strong link between the severity of OSA and lower testosterone levels.3 The more disrupted your sleep, the less testosterone your body is able to make.

Low testosterone doesn’t just show up in blood tests — it shows up in your body and mind. You might notice a drop in energy, reduced muscle mass, increased belly fat, low sex drive, erectile dysfunction, mood swings, poor concentration, and even fragile bones.1 Over time, this can impact your confidence, relationships, and quality of life.

What makes it even more complicated is that low testosterone and poor sleep feed off each other.5 Disrupted sleep lowers testosterone, and low testosterone makes it harder to sleep. It’s a vicious cycle — but the good news is, it’s treatable.

With Men’s Health Week encouraging men to take charge of their health, now’s the perfect time to tune in to how you’re feeling. If you’ve been snoring, waking up tired, or experiencing symptoms of low testosterone, don’t ignore it.

Speak to your doctor about getting tested. A simple sleep study or blood test could uncover what’s holding you back. With the right treatment – whether that’s CPAP therapy for OSA, testosterone support, or lifestyle changes – you can restore your sleep, your hormones, and your sense of vitality.
