Study Shows One In Two Men In Greece Suffer From Sleep Apnea

April 20, 2021

According to the American College of Greece, approximately half of the male population have sleep apnea as opposed to one in five women.

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder characterized by temporary pauses in breathing which reduces oxygen levels. The health risks are severe – sleep apnea increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, type 2 diabetes, stroke and more. Sleep apnea is most prevalent amongst those who snore, are middle aged or older, are overweight or have a history of sleep apnea in their family. The risk of sleep apnea also increases with smoking, alcohol consumption and sedative medications.

The Hellenic Sleep Research Society says that sleep apnea in Greece is increasing among the population at a rapid pace – some experts have predicted it will become a pandemic amongst men aged 40-60 by 2050. Symptoms of sleep apnea include disturbed breathing during sleep, excessive daytime tiredness, morning headaches, irritability and reduced energy levels. If you think you may be at risk, or are suffering from any of these symptoms, it is important to speak with your doctor about your sleep.
