What Can Your Sleep Habits Tell You About Your Health?

May 16, 2021

Sleep is a basic human necessity, despite how often we push it to the side. Study after study has shown that our sleep is intrinsically linked to our overall health – here’s 5 ways your sleep habits could be affecting your health.

  1. Your mental health is suffering due to a lack of sleep: sleep isn’t just important for our physical health; sleep also helps our brains process emotional information and reduce stress.

  2. You struggle to be productive: brain fog, memory loss and lack of creativity can all be caused by a lack of sleep. Getting less than 7 hours of good sleep will stop you from being able to perform at your best.

  3. You’re battling weight gain: it is well known that poor sleep habits can lead to weight gain. Sleep deprivation slows your metabolism, makes you less likely to exercise, and increases your hunger hormones.

  4. Stress is keeping you up: in the same way sleep can affect your mental health, your mental health can also affect your sleep. Unmanaged stress can lead to disrupted sleep, fatigue and even insomnia which in turn can worsen stress.

  5. You can’t switch off from work to sleep: if you work a night shift, or frequently work on your bed or in your bedroom, you might be suffering from poor sleep. Night shifts disrupt our normal circadian rhythm, and studies have shown that using your bed for things other than sleep negatively impacts the quality of your sleep.
