What You Need To Know About The Delta COVID Variant In Melbourne

Victoria’s outbreak was rocked by a new discovery last week – that the new ‘Delta’ variant, seen most prominently in India, has emerged in Victoria. It’s unclear how the family diagnosed with this variant contracted it. The Delta variant is of concern because it is significantly more infectious.

Research from the UK has suggested the Delta variant is 40-50% more infectious than the Alpha variant (formerly known as the UK variant), making it much more infectious than the original strain. We don’t know yet whether it is deadlier, and it is very hard to tell whether it is more transmissible in children.

The encouraging news is that our vaccines are still effective against this new strain, after two doses. The AstraZeneca vaccine is 60% effective, and the Pfizer vaccine is 88% effective. It’s important to get vaccinated to help stop these new variants, and to make sure you get your second dose.
