Frequently Asked Questions

The AirFit F20 is one of the most widely recommended full face masks in the ResMed range and it’s easy to understand why. Whether you're new to CPAP therapy or switching from another mask style, the F20 is designed to make your transition as smooth and comfortable as possible.

What really sets it apart is its adaptability. Thanks to ResMed’s InfinitySeal silicone cushion, the F20 moulds to the natural contours of your face and adjusts to movement throughout the night. That’s particularly helpful for people who sleep on their side, change positions often or breathe through their mouth.

And if you’re sharing a bed, your partner will appreciate the QuietAir vent technology. Integrated into the mask elbow, this diffuser brings sound levels down to a whisper-quiet 21 decibels, quieter than rustling leaves or a ticking clock. It gently disperses exhaled air in multiple directions, helping minimise noise and airflow drafts.

Finally, the mask’s flexible frame sits low beneath the eyes, keeping your line of sight clear so you can comfortably read, wear glasses or watch TV while getting ready for bed. Simply put, the AirFit F20 is a dependable, user-friendly option that balances stability, comfort and quietness.

Yes, the AirFit F20 is universally compatible with nearly all CPAP, APAP and BiPAP devices from major brands. If your machine uses standard 22mm CPAP tubing, the F20 will fit right in – no special adapters required.

If you're using a ResMed device like the AirSense 10 or AirSense 11, you'll benefit from additional features like mask detection, SmartStart and therapy tracking through the myAir app. These integrations help your machine recognise the F20, optimise therapy delivery and provide useful feedback about your mask seal and nightly usage.

The F20 is also fully compatible with ResMed’s ClimateLineAir heated tubing, which helps prevent condensation in cooler rooms and keeps your therapy air at a comfortable, consistent temperature throughout the night.

Whether you're upgrading from another mask, trialling full face therapy for the first time or just looking for something reliable and versatile, the AirFit F20 will likely be a seamless fit.

Choosing the right size is key to comfort and therapy success. The AirFit F20 is available in three sizes – Small, Medium and Large – to suit a wide range of facial shapes. It also comes in a ‘For Her’ variant designed with a smaller size range and lavender accents for users who prefer a more tailored fit.

To get the perfect fit, we recommend you book a mask fitting appointment with one of our CPAP consultants. This is especially important if you're new to CPAP or switching from a different mask style.

While many users are able to fit the mask confidently on their own, ResMed includes a detailed user guide with diagrams and instructions and we also offer easy-to-follow fitting video online to walk you through the process.

Yes, you can absolutely switch between the AirFit F20 and the AirTouch F20, as both use the same frame and headgear. The difference lies in the cushion.

The AirFit F20 comes with the InfinitySeal silicone cushion, which is soft, durable and easy to clean. The AirTouch F20, on the other hand, uses an UltraSoft memory foam cushion, which conforms more closely to your face and provides a plush, gentle seal – ideal for sensitive skin or users prone to red marks.

Many users like to alternate between the two – using the memory foam in cooler months when skin tends to dry out or the silicone version in warmer months for breathability. Cushion swaps take only seconds and you don’t need to purchase a second mask to try them both.

Magnetic clips are designed to make your mask easier to handle, but they aren’t suitable for everyone. If you or someone who will be in close contact with you while wearing the mask has certain medical implants or metal in the body, magnetic clips may not be safe. Please read the important safety information below before choosing a mask with magnets:

Masks with magnetic components are contraindicated for use by patients where they, or anyone in close physical contact while using the mask, have the following:

  • Active medical implants that interact with magnets (i.e., pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), neurostimulators, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts, insulin/infusion pumps)
  • Metallic implants/objects containing ferromagnetic material (i.e., aneurysm clips/flow disruption devices, embolic coils, stents, valves, electrodes, implants to restore hearing or balance with implanted magnets, ocular implants, metallic splinters in the eye)

Regular cleaning keeps your mask working effectively and extends its lifespan. After each use, it’s a good idea to wipe down the cushion with a damp cloth or a CPAP-safe wipe to remove facial oils, makeup or residue that can affect the seal.

Once a week, ResMed recommends a full clean:

  • Disassemble the mask into its separate components (cushion, frame, elbow and headgear)
  • Wash everything – except the headgear – in warm water with a mild, non-fragranced detergent
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue and let air dry completely out of direct sunlight
  • Wash the headgear separately and allow it to dry fully before reassembly

Avoid harsh soaps, antibacterial wipes, bleach or alcohol-based cleaners, as these can degrade the materials and shorten the life of your mask.

If you're not sure whether you're cleaning your mask properly, refer to the instructions in the user guide or check out our video walkthroughs which demonstrate the process step by step.

Like most CPAP masks, the AirFit F20 is built to last but regular wear-and-tear means some components will need replacing on a schedule to keep things working properly.

Here’s a general guide:

  • Cushion: Replace every 1 to 3 months or sooner if you notice leaks, yellowing or reduced comfort
  • Headgear: Replace every 6 months, especially if it becomes stretched, frayed or loses its shape
  • Frame and elbow: These tend to last longer but should be replaced if cracked, warped or no longer secure

If your mask suddenly feels uncomfortable, starts leaking or seems noisier than usual, it might be time to replace a component. Many CPAP providers offer replacement kits or subscription bundles that include everything you need to stay on track.

You can and many people do. The AirFit F20 is designed to accommodate a range of facial shapes, including those with light to moderate facial hair like short beards or moustaches.

That said, a perfect seal may require a few extra tweaks. If you have facial hair:

  • Try washing your face before bed to reduce oils that can interfere with the seal
  • Adjust the headgear to apply slightly firmer tension (without over-tightening)
  • Consider trying the AirTouch F20 memory foam cushion, which tends to form a better seal around coarser or thicker facial hair
  • You might also experiment with a larger cushion size for better jaw coverage

If leaks persist despite adjustments, chat with your CPAP clinician – they can help you test alternatives like hybrid masks or nasal options that better suit your needs.

Yes, the AirFit F20 can work very well for side sleepers. Its low-profile frame and flexible cushion are designed to adapt as you move, helping the mask maintain its seal without feeling bulky or rigid.

The InfinitySeal cushion is particularly good at flexing and rebounding to changes in position – so if you roll from side to back or vice versa during the night, the mask keeps up.

For even better results:

  • Consider using a CPAP pillow with side cutouts to reduce pressure on the mask
  • Keep the headgear snug but not overly tight – this allows the cushion to move with you rather than pressing into your skin
  • If you’re waking up with red marks or pressure spots, the AirTouch cushion may offer a softer alternative
  • Everyone’s face and sleep style are a little different so a bit of trial and error can go a long way.

Noise is one of the most common reasons people (and their partners) struggle with CPAP but the AirFit F20 addresses this with its QuietAir diffuser vent, which significantly lowers exhalation noise.

How quiet? The F20 clocks in at just 21 decibels, which is about the same as rustling leaves or a whisper. That’s far below older full face masks, which often exceed 30–35 dBA and can produce a noticeable “whoosh” throughout the night.

The QuietAir diffuser works by breaking up the exhaled airflow into hundreds of microstreams, dispersing it softly and evenly across a wide area. This reduces not only noise but also the direct draft that can bother bed partners.

If you notice increased noise over time, it’s often a sign the cushion or seal is wearing out – both of which are easy to replace.

The standard version of the AirFit F20 features magnetic clips for easy on-and-off headgear attachment. While convenient, magnets can interfere with certain implanted medical devices. Here is important safety information to note:

Masks with magnetic components are contraindicated for use by patients where they, or anyone in close physical contact while using the mask, have the following:

  • Active medical implants that interact with magnets (i.e. pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD), neurostimulators, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts, insulin/infusion pumps)
  • Metallic implants/objects containing ferromagnetic material (i.e. aneurysm clips/flow disruption devices, embolic coils, stents, valves, electrodes, implants to restore hearing or balance with implanted magnets, ocular implants, metallic splinters in the eye)

For patients with implants, ResMed offers a non-magnetic version of the F20 with traditional clips. Always follow the safety guidance from your healthcare provider and CPAP supplier when selecting a mask.

Yes, the AirFit F20 is a great option for travel - it’s lightweight, compact and fits easily into most CPAP carry cases. Whether you're heading away for a weekend or a longer trip, you can take your mask with you without any fuss.

Most airlines allow CPAP machines and their accessories to be carried on board as medical devices, which means they typically won’t count toward your carry-on baggage allowance. That said, we recommend contacting your airline in advance to double-check their policy just to be safe.

When travelling for more than a few nights, consider bringing a spare cushion in case your primary one becomes worn or loses its seal. If you’re staying somewhere without easy access to clean water, CPAP-friendly wipes make it easier to keep your mask clean while you’re on the go. Users travelling to areas with hard water or unreliable plumbing may also wish to rinse mask components with bottled or filtered water to preserve the cushion's integrity.

It’s not unusual for new CPAP users – or even long-term users trying a new mask – to notice some initial skin irritation, redness or pressure marks. The AirFit F20 is designed to sit comfortably across the face with a soft, adaptive silicone cushion but skin sensitivity varies from person to person.

If you’re noticing marks or redness in the morning, it may be worth checking whether your headgear is fitted too tightly. Contrary to instinct, a tighter mask doesn’t necessarily mean a better seal – in fact, overtightening can lead to more leaks, not fewer, as well as increased skin pressure. Sometimes just a slight loosening of the straps can make a big difference in comfort.

Users with particularly sensitive skin might find the AirTouch F20 – ResMed’s memory foam version of this mask – to be more comfortable. The foam cushion is ultra-soft and conforms more gently to facial contours, which can help reduce red marks or irritation without compromising the seal.

Absolutely! The AirFit F20 is a full face mask that covers both the nose and mouth, so it’s versatile for users who breathe through their mouth, nose, or both.

However, if you exclusively breathe through your nose and want a more minimal design, you might also consider a nasal mask like the AirFit N20. For occasional mouth breathing, using a chin strap with a nasal mask can help.

Both the AirFit F20 and AirFit F30 are full face masks, but they cater to different user preferences.

  • AirFit F20: Covers both the nose and mouth, making it a traditional full face mask. Great for users who need a stable seal, especially at higher pressures.
  • AirFit F30: Features a more compact design that sits under the nose, reducing contact with the bridge of the nose and giving a more open line of sight.

If you experience nose bridge soreness with the F20 or want a smaller mask footprint, the F30 might be worth trying. Both masks offer similar QuietAir technology for reduced noise.

While you can sleep in most positions with the AirFit F20, side sleeping is often recommended because it helps keep the airway open and can reduce snoring and apneas.

Here are some tips:

  • Use a CPAP-friendly pillow with cutouts to reduce pressure on the mask.
  • Make sure the headgear is snug but not too tight, so the cushion adapts as you move.
  • If you sleep on your stomach, consider switching to a nasal pillow mask for minimal contact.

For optimal performance, your CPAP machine should generally be placed on a bedside table or a stable surface at about the same level or slightly lower than your head. This helps reduce the risk of rainout (water condensation in the tubing).

If your machine is too high or too low, you may notice issues like water collecting in the tubing or uneven airflow. Keep the machine on a flat, stable surface with enough room for air circulation.
