Study Reveals Sleeping Too Much Can Increase Your Stroke Risk

September 20, 2021

We all have different sleeping preferences and night time routines – however a study has revealed that our sleeping habits could have a serious impact on our health. Research has found that the way you sleep could significantly impact your risk of having a stroke.

A 2019 study published in the Neurology journal looked at the effects of sleep on stroke risk in more than 31,000 retired employees for six years. They found that there were two factors that contributed to a higher risk of stroke – long napping and long sleeping. Those who slept longer than nine hours and napped for 90 minutes a day were 85% more likely to have a stroke than those who moderately napped and slept.

Additionally, the researchers found that poor sleep quality showed a 29% higher risk of stroke, highlighting that sleep quality also matters! If you are feeling excessively tired after a full night’s sleep, or struggle to fall or stay asleep, speak to your doctor or a sleep specialist about how you can improve your sleep today.
